The Royal Photographic Society's "entry level" distinction - Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society (LRPS)
To become a Licentiate of The Society, applicants must submit a panel of ten images which show variety in approach and techniques but not necessarily in subject matter. Submissions can be prints or digital images. Applications are assessed against four criteria:
1. Camera work and Technical Quality
2. Visual Awareness
3. Communication
4. Overall Impression
That last one is the kicker. The panel of images as a whole is effectively considered to be "the eleventh image" and all of the images need to work together, so you often face the difficult choice of having to exclude your favourites or your best work because it doesn't fit in with the rest of the panel. the assessors are looking out for balance, flow & coherence in the layout of your panel. you also need to show variety in approach and techniques. it is Demanding but considered achievable for most dedicated photographers.
I applied for my licentiate in May 2022 and, after an anxious few minutes watching the assessors scrutinise my work, I was delighted to be successful with my first submission.
